Devlog - Why Make Rust & Rage? Why Make Any Game?
When I played Borderlands, aside from the great story and unforgettable characters, there was always one thing that kept me coming back: the thrill of discovery. The excitement of wondering, What will the next gun do? Would it be a powerhouse of destruction? Or maybe it’d have an oversized magazine clip that made it stand out?
I wanted to take that thrill and build on it—and that’s where the idea for Rust & Rage was born.
One of my favorite features is that we track which gun you used the most before you died. In my last game, my favorite weapon was the “Wild SMG of Chicken Fury.” Why? Because it randomly launched chickens with grenades strapped to them. That’s the kind of chaos and creativity we wanted to deliver.
In Rust & Rage, each gun is defined by roughly 20 variables. Some guns are heavy and slow you down, while others might give you a speed boost. Some excel at long-range sniping, while others are devastating up close. And it’s not just the guns—the bullets themselves are game-changers. With 18 different bullet types, each with wildly unique abilities, your loadout truly matters.
I’m constantly surprised by the weapons I pick up while fighting endless waves of enemies. The randomness ensures that every encounter feels fresh and exciting.
But it’s not just about the guns. Our grenades? They’re as unpredictable and entertaining as the guns. Then there are power-armored boots and shields that introduce even more depth. Some might leave a frost trail behind you, repel enemies, or electrify nearby foes. And when you mix all of this with special abilities and skills, no two playthroughs are ever the same.
And that’s why we created Rust & Rage. To capture that sense of unpredictability, joy, and experimentation that keeps players coming back for more.
We hope you enjoy the chaos as much as we do.
